Foreign nationals and racial foreigners cost taxpayers over £1.1 billion a year to keep in prison.
There are currently 28,480 prisoners classified as non-White British in England and Wales, accounting for over one-third (34 per cent) of the prison population.
According to the Ministry of Justice, each one costs approximately £41,000 a year to keep locked up, making the total annual cost of non-White British prisoners £1,167,680,000.
A closer look at the figures shows that whites are underrepresented in our prisons, while all other recorded ethnic groups are overrepresented.
At the end of 2011, there were 85,374 prisoners incarcerated in England and Wales (Ministry of Justice, Offender Management Statistics Quarterly). Of those, 61,899 (72 per cent) were white and 56,894 (66 per cent) were White British. This is despite the fact that the White British population of England and Wales, according to ONS data from 2009, is 83 per cent.
Blacks are the most overrepresented ethnic group in our prisons. According to the ONS, 2.81 per cent of the population of England and Wales is black, yet 13 per cent (11,126) of inmates are black.
That means blacks are more than six times more likely to commit a crime than whites.
Asians and mixed race people are also overrepresented. Seven per cent of the prison population is Asian (6,193, not including Chinese), while the Asian population is at 5.87 per cent. Three per cent of prisoners are mixed race, while just 1.8 per cent of the population is mixed race.
Fifteen per cent of all criminals in our jails are foreign nationals.
Additionally, the ethnicity of 2,118 prisoners is listed by the Ministry of Justice as ‘Not stated’ or ‘Unrecorded’, meaning the total cost of imprisoning foreigners is likely to be even higher.
Whatever the case, one thing is certain: this £1 billion-plus annual bill for housing many of the world’s criminals is another one we would not have to pay if there were a British National Party government in office.
